College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST)

The College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is the state of Florida’s exit requirement for students pursuing an Associates of Arts Degree (A.A.) and planning on transferring to the upper division at a Florida state university. To earn an A.A. degree, you must satisfy the CLAST requirement.

     Reading                                295

     Math                                       295

The CLAST consists of four (4) subtests: Essay, Reading, English Language Skills, and Math.

The Essay is a paper/pencil test.

Subsequent CLAST Essay dates and registration deadlines are as follows:

  • October 7, 2008 (Registration Deadline: September 5, 2008)
  • February 24, 2009 (Registration Deadline: January 23, 2009)

  • The Reading, English Language Skills and Math sections of the CLAST (called CATCLAST)are computerized and offered daily in Assessment Services (Bldg. 100/Room 107) on the Daytona campus.
Special testing conditions are available if you have a physical handicap or learning disability. (It is your responsibility to make known your need for special testing conditions by indicating this on the CLAST application.)

There are several methods by which students may satisfy the CLAST requirement other than taking the exam. You must take the CLAST EXAM if:you do not qualify for any ALTERNATIVES listed.

    ALTERNATIVES:

There are other ways that you may satisfy CLAST requirements called ALTERNATIVES. You may not need to take the READING, ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS or ESSAY PORTION of the CLAST if:

  • you've earned a score of 500 on the Verbal/Critical Reading section of the SAT or
  • you've earned a score of 22 on the Reading and 21 on the Writing sections of the ACT or
  • you have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in ENC1101 and ENC1102 or the college credit equivalents.

You may not need to take the MATH PORTION of the CLAST if:
  • you've earned a score of 500 on the math section of the SAT or
  • you've earned a score of 21 on the math section of the ACT or
  • you have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in two college math courses (MAC1105 or higher)

If you meet the qualifications for an alternative, Daytona State will automatically waive the requirement via computer. You will receive a notice when this has been completed.

    CLAST Waivers

Any student who has taken any of the four subtests of the CLAST at least four times or is registered with Student Disability Services at Daytona State College and has a documented disability may apply for a waiver. The CLAST Waiver Committee will review the request and will determine whether a waiver shall be granted. Students may fill out a CLAST Waiver Petition in the Q & A or Assessment Services department on any campus.
