Community invited to suicide prevention presentations

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Aug. 19, 2008) - As schools gear up for the start of another academic year, the stresses involved can prove too much for some people. Changes in an individuals behavior is possibly the first indication that they may be at risk of suicide and professional help should be sought.

With the assistance of the Campus Suicide Prevention Grant sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Daytona State College along with Bethune-Cookman University and the University of Central Florida, have established themselves as resources in the community in preventing and bringing awareness to suicide.

Free and open to the public, a film presentation along with a question and answer session, will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28.

“The film captures the audience’s attention with inspiring images of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge which has, unfortunately, witnessed more than 1,000 suicides since it opened in 1937,” commented Project Director and Daytona State Counselor, Mitch Pietras. “Being aware of the right things to say and do with someone who you feel is at risk of suicide is fundamental to helping them find the help they need.”

It is estimated that between 300 to 400 doctors commit suicide each year - a separate presentation will be made Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. that is directed toward healthcare professionals.

Both presentations will be held in the Madorsky Theater located in the Mori Hosseini Center (Bldg. 1200) at 1200 W. International Speedway Boulevard. Seating is limited.
