Summer sports camps at Daytona State promote health, fitness and fun
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (June 20, 2008) - Beat the heat this summer with indoor sports camps that promote health, fitness and fun hosted by Daytona State College's Athletic, and Health and Wellness departments.
Just announced! Girl's Basketball Camp tips-off Monday, July 21 at 8:30 a.m.in the L. Gale Lemerand Center (Bldg. 310) on Daytona State College's Daytona Beach Campus. Fundamental skills such as shooting, dribbling, rebounding, passing, and conditioning will be taught by Lady Falcon coaches and athlete players. Open to girls of all ages. Choose four sessions to suit your schedule for a maximum of six-hours of instruction for a cost of only $75 per student (maximum of 10 students per session). Four 90-minute sessions will be held each day Monday though Thursday, July 21 - 24. Registration begins prior to each session. Pre-registration and payment are recommended. Week-long SCUBA camps will be held in the L. Gale Lemerand Center's
aquatic facility beginning Monday, July 14 and Monday, July 21. Camp is for ages 12 through 18 and costs $150. Upon successful completion of this camp, participates will receive their lifetime SSI SCUBA certification. Instructors from Spruce Creek SCUBA will teach this week-long camp consisting of classroom work, pool time, and two checkout dives at area springs. Participants must attend all classes and complete skill requirements to obtain certification. Textbooks, camp t-shirt, rental equipment and tanks will be provided. Students must provide their own mask, fins, snorkel and weight belt. A mandatory parent meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 1 at 6:30 p.m. must be attended prior to these camps. Receive an American Red Cross Community Water Safety and CPR certificate on successful completion of the Jr. Lifeguarding Camp, to be held Monday, July 7 through July 11. Participants (aged 11 - 14) will learn water safety and rescue skills, basic first aid and CPR for infant, child and adult. Aspects of pool and ocean lifeguarding will also be covered. The camp includes trips to Daytona Lagoon and to the beach to learn more about ocean lifesaving and how the beach patrol operates. Participates should bring bathing suit, towel and dry change of clothes. Cost for this week-long camp is $130. For more information call (386) 506-4386.
For ages 9 through 14, the summer camp programs concludes with a week-long Aquatics Camp starting Monday, Aug. 4 at 9 a.m. Participates will learn valuable skills such as lifeguarding, water safety, first aid and physical fitness, and enjoy activities such as water polo, competitive swimming and snorkeling. The Aquatics Camp ends with a field trip to Daytona Lagoon on Friday, Aug. 8. Camp participates must be able to swim 25-yards and should bring with them a bathing suit, towel and dry change of clothes. Camp for this camp is $130. For more information call (386) 506-4386.
Trips to Daytona Lagoon, beach and dive sites require parent transportation to and from these off-campus locations. Camp participants mu
st be pre-registered. Pack a hearty lunch! Lunch time will be supervised and students will remain with their camps. Parents are welcome to volunteer or visit anytime.
